A true and historical movie about a free black man, Solomon Northup, tricked into slavery called “12 Years A Slave” hit movie theaters on October 18, 2013 and was directed by Steve McQueen. The book the movie was based on was written by Northrup himself (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) and the screenplay was written by John Ridley. The movie was a success and received an Academy Award for Best Picture. The story takes place during the times of abolition and after the civil war, but if you were a slaver from the south, negroes could still be bought and sold. The first being Eliza (played by Adepero Oduye) who was once a slave to a man in the north that was given to special privileges by her master for the comforts she provided to him. She bore two children by this master. When he died the daughter sold her to Brown and Hamilton along with her children. She and the children traveled with Northrup from D.C. and sold separately at auction where she was to never see her children again. Eliza went to Ford’s planation with him and roomed with him. Stricken with continuous grief Mrs. Ford had her sold off. The next female salve was Patsey (played by Lupita Nyong’o) who was Epps slave with Northrup. She was a victim of slavery, but also cruel brutality by Mrs. Epps (played by Sarah Pauslon), because her husband favored her and bedded he often. At one point, she begs Northrup to kill her out of mercy, because of her demise. Both of these women suffered from sexual assault, physical brutality, and loss of life itself. Each suffered in their own but, never the less just as daunting. These women’s lives can only show a small detail of what they must have suffered daily and endured. The sacrifice for their own integrity and inner strength was prevalent throughout their scenes. The strength that each of them showed while being beaten, raped, maimed, and labored was
