Analysis Of The Locket

The locket was an extremely interesting story yet I found it to be somewhat predictable during the time that it was written. The men were usually sent away to war while the woman stayed back to take care of their families. It was expected that several man would not return home due to the causalities of war, yet Octave remained hopeful.

Octave was a plain woman that with simple means. Octave enjoyed life, fell in love with Edmond and later married him. When Octave loved she loved hard and she loved her husband. Edmond. After their marriage, Edmond, just as many of the other men of the town, was sent to the Civil War. Although, Octave worried once Edmond was gone, she remained hopeful that he would have a safe return. Octave wanted nothing more than for Edmond to remember her and her love while he was fighting in the war. Octave decided to give Edmond her most precious possession. She gave him a locket that held a

Judge Miller told Octave to remove her black veil and never put it back on again. The veil in this story and many stories means that a loved one has died. When Judge Miller told Octave to remove her black veil and never put it back on again, it was obvious that there may have been a death but it was probably not Edmond.

Once Judge Miller and Octave entered the house Edmond was waiting with open arms and gave Octave a very big hug. Edmond was as she had hoped still alive and the scene where Judge Miller told her to take off the veil gave it away before Octave entered the house.

The locket was predictable because several other stories of war and love have the same happy ending. The reader is led to believe that the soldier will die and it is later discovered that they are still alive. Although, there or many different story lines the stories usually end the same way. With a long lost love one that you thought was dead returning to his loved

The black veil is a visual reminder of the sins of people. The members of the church become uncomfortable around the minister because he is physically, with his veil, confronting them of the sins they have committed. The minister wears the veil to visually show his congregation that people commit sin, but those who do sin have to face the consequences; just as the minister is being judged and criticized himself for the veil. The veil is used as a weapon to force members of the church to think about what they done. It is the veil itself to represent the darkness of human kind but the color of the veil that stands the visual image of…

“War does not determine who is right- only who is left,” is a quote by Bertrand Russell. This spectrum expresses the casualties of war. In other words, Russell means war is used as an outlet to define a “winner”, or in this case, someone who is right. The veiled truth is that there are no true winners of war when comparing the damage created and the lives lost. Looking at war through that perspective, John F. Kennedy, among others, also agreed.…

Throughout the story, the main character Reverend Hooper wears a black veil in order to to hide his face from the gaze of others and from himself. Hooper concealing his face proves the fact that everybody else in his community puts on a facade of righteousness and innocence in order to hide their sinful nature. The veil at a glance is a symbol for the sins that mankind hides within. It is not always representative of Hooper's own sin but those sins many others have committed. By overtly wearing a visible black veil, Reverend Hooper discloses to his parishioners that he is not disclosing to them his particular sins.…

The Minister's Black Veil is a parable that has to do with a minister who wears a black veil in order to represent everyone's secret sin or inner sorrow. The minister, Reverend Mr. Hooper, believes that everyone carries a sin or inner sorrow around with them that they do not make known to the people around them. He wears the black veil because although his sin is visible to everyone, everyone else carries their black veil in their hearts. Nathaniel Hawthorne in this parable wants to show that everyone sins but he hide it in our hearts instead of showing it and letting people know in fear of what people might say about us. Hawthorne sends the message that everyone sins, everyone carries guilt, and everyone will judge you no matter what.…

The significance of the black veil on Mr. Hooper’s face is sorrows and can be obscured by a veil no matter how dark the sin is. Due to the meaning of the black veil, Mr. Hooper is certain to let no one see under it, not even his…

    A. In The Minister’s Black Veil, the townspeople feel that the veil represents the secret sins of Mr. Hooper, the reverend. Personally, I believe that the veil represents the secret sins and hypocrisy of the townspeople. Regardless of what the reverend did or did not do, the people payed so much attention to the priest and his veil that they did not realize they were gossiping and being rude to him. Even while on his deathbed, the people of the town attempt to get Mr. Hooper to remove his veil.…

The age of Feuilletons is not ongoing today. Books that teach about culture have been written since 1950 have brought forth much about the society in which we live in and how it changes. Novels for all age groups such as If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Things They Carried, Invisible Man, and Buddha in the Attic justify that we do not live in an age of Feuilletons. Many novels since then have discussed the flaws of society, history, and moral conflicts that are still prevalent today and will be everlasting to the year 2075.…

Although a majority of the story had to do with the grievances of Octavie following her knowledge of Edmond’s death, there was a slight chance that what she thought to be true might not actually be and that this was not the end of Octavie and Edmond’s love. I credit Kate Chopin for writing a convincing plot twist but I also feel as though she meant it to be obvious that the story could not end with a widowed…

While reading “The Jewelry,” I found it to be an interpretive style of fiction. Maupassant’s primary goal is not only to entertain the readers, but to engage the readers mind into finding the deeper and hidden message that lies within the story. During the beginning of “The Jewelry,” I thought I knew what the outcome would be, however that was not the case. The plot took a completely different turn than I had expected it to. Maupassant used a lot of irony throughout the story, which hid the actual message of it pretty well.…
