Memorizing the Pledge of Allegiance is a flashback to the kindergarten days. Not knowing what the pledge was or what it stood for, but having to stand each morning, place our right hand over our heart, and monotonously recite the pledge like robots. However, engraving the pledge into these young minds goes against many religions that do not believe in a God. Having them say the pledge either forces them to recognize that there is a God or protest against the pledge. For those that do not believe in God, the alteration of the pledge is a must, in order to maintain a neutral religious government in the land of the free. There should be lessons throughout the schooling system that educates the students on the history and importance of the Pledge of Allegiance. The lessons will give the students a better understanding as to why they stand each morning and recite the pledge, “We teach our children to recite our secular religious prayer, The Pledge of Allegiance, but we don’t teach them what it means. I do not think most kids or adults have ever really thought about the meaning of the words in the pledge,” (Humphreys,1). The words “under God,” do not necessarily imply that the U.S. is completely under God’s control and many individuals do not realize that there are different interpretations of the pledge. Religion dictated the words “under God” in the pledge for all citizens to follow. Unfortunately, religion no longer dictates to every citizen as a common denomination. It goes against the freedom of religion and indoctrinates religion in the minds of children. It would be a simple fix to revert back to the original pledge, where the words, “under God,” are not included. This alteration would be able to formally unify the United States with a pledge, without excluding anyone because of religion. No longer would individuals of other religious origins have to uncomfortably sit or respectfully stand as others around them are comfortably reciting the pledge that does not go against their religion of choice. The pledge should cater to those of all religious beliefs, so those that practice other religions do not feel as if they must either go against their nation by not reciting the pledge or go against their personal beliefs by reciting the pledge.
