Analysis Of The Last Supper

The photograph Last Supper by Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin 1 for her exhibit Ecce Homo has caused controversy among the christian community and in the general public that know of it for its provocative image. The artwork reimagines Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous piece of the same name but Ohlson’s artwork, and exhibit in general, takes issues concerning the Bible and the LGBTQ+ community and incorporates them into her work. The aim of this essay, then, is to show how Last Supper purposely provokes the onlooker by perverting certain canonical christian theological aspects. This essay will achieve this by analysing the three stand out aspects of the photograph; Jesus as a transgendered woman, an S&M fetish wear model, and the apostles as cross-dressers.

She has used subtleties such as the shoes this version of Christ wears to create a conversation about female representation in the Bible and by placing
Christ as a woman it adds to that conversation by making us ask why this version is so unthinkable and uncomfortable.
Aside from Jesus we have this apostle at the very far right donning what seems to be
S&M fetish wear which in itself is considered taboo to display so publicly however, for it to be in the presence of a religious context seems even more so. Here Ohlson is bringing attention towards the Bibles view of sex as it says: “…and they shall be one flesh. 25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.”3
(Genesis 2:24-25). Sex here is stressed by the fact that both participants do not feel shame but there is a slight humiliation aspect within S&M which could mean that
Ohlson is attempting to mock Christianity’s ideas of sex with this character. Also, in
Sadomasochistic sexual practices there are definitely other more dark aspects which go against christian theology especially in the more extreme end of the

Throughout history art has been used as a platform for artists to express their views, cultural concerns, and or to re-illustrate historical events in a modern scene. Samella S. Lewis used her platform, particularly in her piece entitled "The Preacher" as a medium in which she is applying the story of Jesus in a modern day context. Although the story of Jesus and his twelve disciples have been told for decades, it is often difficult for the preaching’s and teachings of Jesus to be applied in our present day in age. In Lewis’ 1943 painting entitled “The Preacher” (S. Lewis) a modern and more relatable scene of Jesus and his followers are depicted in which the viewers can find more relatable. Through the use of color, proportion, and symbolism, Lewis is able to still keep the historical context in her piece, but shows that though many African American pieces are not created we can still identify with the stories.…

Hist/Wmns 313 1. I thought the reading by Walker-Bynum was very interesting. I have never thought of the idea that Christ could be seen as female. I learned a lot of reasons as to why people thought they saw the body of Christ as female. It surprised me that people thought it because most people always see Christ as a man just because men seem to have more power and a bigger part in history in general.…

Also in 1978 was a UPCUSA conference. UPCUSA is the United Presbyterian Church in the United States and was the biggest branch of Presbyterianism in the U.S. from 1958 to 1983. At this conference, the main focus was looking into Scripture. A report from the conference said: Of all the factors that contribute to divisiveness in our denomination, the Committee found none is more persuasive or fundamental than the question of how the Scriptures are to be interpreted. In other words, the widely differing views on the ways the Old and New Testaments are accepted, interpreted, and and applied were repeatedly cited to us by lay people, clergy, and theologians as the most prevalent cause of conflict in our denomination today……

The artist describes her work with, “The look pulls people in, but as you look closer you can see the image deteriorate, and if you are more privy to Native history you can see it right away” (qtd in Brien). As one examines The Last Thanks, it is evident that Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting, The Last Supper, sparked Wendy Red Star’s inspiration for this photograph. It is obvious in the title itself that The Last Thanks is influenced by The Last Supper. Red Star is even positioned similarly as Da Vinci’s portrayal of Jesus Christ. With the obvious comparisons to Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous piece, Red Star’s artwork “successfully forces the viewer to critique colonialism and religion with every examination of the image” (Tesema).…

My personal response to the Egalitarian views of Linda Belleville and Craig Keener is varied. When reading and learning from Belleville I would go from understanding and personally align in thought, to feeling her view was somewhat stretching for me especially when other references were used outside of scripture. I was able to follow Keener closer, but this could be based on my up bringing in the evangelical church. It was very helpful to learn from Belleville the difference between egalitarianism and feminism and that they are not the same view. That feminism minimalizes sexual distinction and egalitarians affirm sexual distinction and that they are equal yet complementary.…

The Children of God, a new religious movement by David Berg serves to manifest the idea of the “Law of Love.” Conserving the ideas of “flirty-fishing” and evangelism, the role of gender and sexuality is highly interpreted within the Children of God. In specific, gender and sexuality is highly targeted towards females within new religious movements (NRMs). To begin, gender plays a role in new religious movements, where women become subordinated in a hierarchy, lower than men, while they represent sensitivity and a symbol of commune (Palmer 1993). Women join a new religious movement as an outlet to help better their everyday lives, especially dealing with relationships with a spouse or family members (Bromley and Cowan 2008).…

In 1996 a national poll was taken because of the growing number of gay and lesbian couples in the United States. Did the general populace accept this rising form of sexuality? Those polls showed that only seventeen years ago 68% of American adults opposed gay and same sex marriage stating that marriage should be “between man and woman” and that only 27% agreed that same sex unions should be made legal for “any two people” (Wikipedia.com). This year they took another poll and the results were shocking: a record high of 55% of American adults are for same sex marriage and family dynamics! Only 40% continue to oppose such unions!…
