He tells the story from his point of view and gives vivid flashbacks about his childhood and gets the reader involved and feel like they are part of the story. He was never taught how to write, but he taught himself without people helping him. Alexie went on to writing short stories, poetry and novels. He was also a pediatrician, but due to his upbringing, he decided to take a turn and become a teacher. He also started reaching out to other Indians and tried to encourage them to be confident enough to do what he did. He says that reading and writing saved his life and he wanted to share his story with other people so that they could maybe be encouraged to make a difference like he did. Alexie was just a simple Spokane Indian boy, who spent his life teaching and learning how to become the best teacher and writer he could be.
