The Joker and Antisocial Personality Disorder
After doing a comprehensive observation of the famous but yet infamous character “The Joker” and researching his thoughts, behaviors, and actions, I have deduced that he suffers from antisocial personality disorder, one of the dramatic-emotional personality disorders. Antisocial personality disorder is a common diagnosis, as it affects about 200,000 people in the US per year. (Mayo Clinic, 2016). Many of the people diagnosed are men since men are five times more likely than women to meet the criteria for antisocial personality disorder (Kring & Johnson, 2014). Those with this disorder are antisocial, hostile, deceitful, manipulative, irresponsible, risk takers, impulsive, aggressive, irritable,

According to Kring (2014), “the core feature of antisocial personality disorder (ADP) is a pervasive pattern of disregard for the rights of others.” The Joker is at least eighteen years old and shows evidence of conduct disorder before the age of fifteen. He also likes the spotlight and broadcasts himself to the public and media. The Joker also was continually being confronted by law enforcements and Batman due to the constant crimes he commits, but easily avoids capture due to the sick and disturbed games he plays on them. However, once they caught him he was punished until he escaped. For example after being interrogated and beaten by Batman, the Joker escaped shortly after. And once he would escape he would bounce right back to committing shocking crimes. The joker was also deceitful, for example, one time The Joker robbed the Gotham National City Bank and manipulated his group of thugs into helping him and told them they would all divide the money up when they got back. Instead, The Joker killed his group of thugs and kept all of the money for himself. While robbing the bank he all dressed up as and used the alias Bozo the clown. Additionally, the Joker fails to plan ahead a lot of times and is very impulsive. For example, right before he was arrested by the police and Batman, he was standing in the road yelling hit me when Batman was driving towards him. The …show more content…
Usually, when a patient is brought into counseling for psychological help, there is a lack of improvement due to the fact that the patient is usually disobedient and uncooperative. The treatment that would probably be the most effective for the Joker would be a treatment facility in which he could not hurt others. This way if he adjusted his negative behaviors he would be able to earn some privileges such as doing a hobby that he enjoys, as long as it cannot harm someone else. Also, since the Joker really does not have any healthy relationships in his life, a combination of behavior modification and psychotherapy would be helpful. In addition, the development of a healthy relationship between him and a therapist would probably be helpful for him as well. The development of these healthy relationships could be the way to teach him how to treat others the right way without hurting them for his own sick pleasure. The Joker also may be suffering from depression. Also, antidepressant medications may be beneficial in his situation to help his irritability along with any depression. Antidepressants are not actually used to treat individuals with antisocial personality disorder, however, they could help with some of the symptoms he has. Treatment depends on each individual’s specific situation, and

Out of the five films that I could choose from, I watched We Need to Talk About Kevin interested me the most and I acknowledged many interesting, and unique cinematic techniques that I was eager to talk about. The two minute sequence that I have chosen I felt was particularly interesting. In those two minutes of footage the personalities of Eva, Francis, Kevin and Celia are portrayed perfectly and clearly for the spectator to seethe psychopathic betrayed by Kevin through the use of mise-en-scène, sound effects, music and flawless acting. The first thing that caught my eye during my first watch of “We Need to Talk about Kevin” was the strong use of the color red which is highly symbolic of the inevitable bloodshed.…

Many of us should be under the impression that based on psychopathic behavior, psychopaths will never commit suicide. Understanding how human behavior is linked to ¬¬¬different disorders is essential while striving to comprehend crime and its causes. Many professionals often assume psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder are identical, and interchangeably utilize the two terms. Upon further investigation and research, both have been proven to be in fact different, and entail different elements. Psychopathy is a bundle of socially deviant behaviors and personality traits; antisocial personality disorder, on the other hand, is composed of both criminal and antisocial behavior. Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight is one of the best iterations of Batman since the concept of Batman was first created in 1939; the film offers easy to digest bites of philosophy and a deeper look into human nature. At the same time, The Dark Knight provides insight into society's views on mental illness, what society believes mental illness looks like, and society's views toward the justice system. The Dark Knight is the highest grossing Batman film since the first Batman movie (ironically named Batman: The Movie) in 1966, and was even awarded "Movie of the Year" by AFI Awards. Despite the film's success and acclaim, what does The Dark Knight say about society's views on mental illness and our justice system?…

Nicholson’s Nihilism Partly because I’m a Batman enthusiast, I noticed, from early on in this film, that a nexus existed between Nicholson’s role as J.P. McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and his later casting as the joker in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. In this film’s early development, we learned of McMurphy’s past: five arrests for assault and his most recent arrest for statutory rape – how joker-esque! And only an upstanding joker would find a mental institution more appealing than prison. Nevertheless, as the film ran its course, I saw more and more of this anarchy. From showing a deck of cards fraught with pornography to the lead psychiatrist, Dr. Spivey, to stealing a fishing vessel, and to hosing down fellow patients with water,…

Borrowing from psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus’ statement about Psychology, it can be said that “the Joker has a long past but a short history”. The lack of childhood history makes it difficult to fully understand and acknowledge the genesis of the character’s many faults and traits. However, we may just empathise with Alfred the Butler and show our agreement when he says, “Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with.…
