Analysis Of The Honor-Shame Ideology

The honor-shame ideology can be dated back thousands of years to japanese samurai. In their case, they would rather die with honor in battle, rather than surrender and bring shame onto their families. In World War II this became one of the factors when deciding if the United States should drop an atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The decision was made because the Japanese army would not surrender and bring shame to their family, and the United States would have lost thousands of lives if they kept fighting on land. A great way to define the honor-shame ideology, is that the person rooted in this ideology is like a walking bank account of honor. Daniel in a few parts of the movie is seen as a dyadic character. The scene where a rich kids pull up next to Ali and asks if she wants to go hang out and parked right in front of them is Daniel’s mom. Ali says she doesn’t want to because she wants to spend time with Daniel and Daniel gets mad at Ali for not going when he says “you can go if you want”. The whole situation is made worse when one of the kids says “Nice car Mrs. Larusso”. This tells us that Daniel evaluates his self worth based on what other people think of him. Daniel thinks that because he is poor he doesn’t fit in with the crowd. This dyadic character fits right into the final scene. The reason Daniel wants to go out and fight Johnny is why the movie should have ended before the fight. Daniel says that he will still get beat up and that the only thing he’s proven is that they can beat him up whenever they want. By sweeping Daniel’s leg, they cobra kai kids have delivered a blow to Daniel’s bank of honor. He wants to reclaim his honor by fighting in the final match. If Daniel had a different reason for going out such as, he worked so hard and came so far in the tournament, and if he could possibly go out and fight, then the entire movie is ok.
