Kublai Khan was considered the Great Khan. One of the main reasons behind his title is extreme military intelligence. It was mainly because of his strategic mind that the Mongols were so successful with their conquering. In Thorin's case, he is smart enough to know that he needs to rally a group of people to help him defeat Smaug, the dragon. There would be no other approach which would suffice in his near impossible endeavor. Before Enjorlas decided to go through with his revolution, he needed to a reason for the people to rebel other than their shallow reasons. When General Lamarque, or the "people's man", dies, Enjorlas ignites the flame of rebellion in the citizens by constructing a barricade on Lamarque's grave.
