Sophomore English Reflection

After the hero's journey, I stand here looking in the mirror as a new writer, thinker, speaker and participant. I am not the same person that stood in front of this mirror on the first day of Sophomore English. The journey was long and fulfilling and i've experienced many obstacles and challenges along the way that have shaped the person I see in the mirror now. The second semester of english was much more riveting for me and I felt that I was truly able to express my creativity and passion for literature and english throughout the activities, writing assignments and readings that were apart of the second half of the journey.

The purpose was to just let all of your creativity flow without stopping for hesitation or judgement. The first day that we had to write was the hardest. I felt uncomfortable writing because I was embarrassed that it might not be perfect, or it might not come out how I wanted it to. But, that was the magic of the ten minute writing, it wasn't always perfect but every idea went straight from your head to your fingertips and you rapidly wrote out everything and sometimes at the end of it, you had something pretty good. There was something special about the silence of everyone in the room. Everyone was so focused and in tuned with their writing that there was nothing but creative energy and peacefulness to whip up something that was formed from internalizing your ideas and letting your imagination create a story. Each ten minute writing was a preparation for the final “test”. The final “test” was the short story. Each day when we were developing a character, plot and creating a story with detail and description our final obstacle was to create one big story. The ten minute writing pieces had prepared us for the short story and when we got the chance to write you were able to make anything happen. At

The story I chose to summarize and reflect was ‘Becoming a Writer”, by Russell Baker. Baker accentuated on how rapidly one can determine such fascination for something they never they had in them. Writing was a challenge for Baker, over his years of schooling, but it wasn’t until his third year of high school that gave him his purpose in life, becoming a writer. Baker disliked everything about the subject English.…

I don’t know how I started writing in the first place. I still can’t quite believe I write. To this day, I look back to the past summer with a mix of wonder and disbelief, because venturing into writing has completely changed the trajectory of my life, when I signed up for my first writing workshop. I think luck might have been involved in this decision: truthless, ruthless luck. Somehow the planets were aligned the right way, and the right song was playing in my head, the wind was knocking right against the windowpanes, and I was right enough to click on the first weekly assigned reading and fall over, smack in love with the words of Ocean Vuong, or Terrance Hayes, or Toni Morrison.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. The writing skills that I had learned in both classes dealt with analysis papers pertaining to a specific prompt or style. I also had been exposed to lots of literature, specifically short novels and poetry that I had to interpret. My high school AP English classes prepped me for the college level writing class at High Point University.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Sitting at my desk in english class, 15 minutes before the end of the period, feeling a small sense of deep inner satisfaction from my work in the previous double period of Draw/Paint level 4, I held a piece of paper in my hands pertaining the information and guidelines of a common app essay. Somewhat confused, I stared blankly at the paper. The bolded words of the length requirement and the due date stuck out against the pure white like a needle through the skin of my finger. I felt a deep sense of dread as I was trying to brainstorm an immediate idea as to what I could write about. I thought of the lessons I learned from my father on right and wrong.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

My History As A Writer Throughout my lifetime I have come to love and absolutely hate writing. The reasoning of the assignment or topic has a lot to do with my affinity and disgust. As an art form I recently come to love writing down my thoughts, ideas, opinions and stories.…

Sneaky foxes, obnoxious tragedies, and ACT English test prepping helped to shape me into the writer I am today. Walking into the classroom of my last high school English class, I distinctly remember the musty smell of teenage stress and overpriced Gucci perfume. I straightened out my blue suit shirt and said to myself “I am going to get an A in this class.” I sat by my ramen-loving friend in the back left corner of the room, opened my pink sparkly binder, and began imagining how fun it would be to read The Great Gatsby. However, as the class started and the annoying jeopardy school bell rang in my ear, all I could think about was the “fish n’ chips” lunch that I would be receiving in exactly fifty-three minutes.…
