Analysis Of The Hangman By Dianna Hardy

Improved Essays
Dianna Hardy wrote, “It only takes one voice, at the right pitch, to start an avalanche.” Meaning when one person stands up for what they believe in and say it loud enough for all to hear people will join their cause like an avalanche. One example of this would be slavery in America. Slavery went on for years but no one ever spoke out against the cruelties in it. Until one man spoke out with the right pitch, this man was Abraham Lincoln. He pushed and pushed for the abolishment of slavery until he was heard and the country took his back like an avalanche. This quote relates to “The Hangman” because the author is trying to show that if you speak out against cruelties you will be heard and you can stop them. This is seen when one man speaks

Throughout the sixth chapter of The American Political Tradition, Richard Hoftstader the author, refers to Wendell Phillips’ role in history as an agitator. For Wendell Phillips the role of an agitator was a profession, very different from that of a politician, throughout his course he could never be satisfied to the fullest. Hoftstader believes that Phillips’ role as an agitator “was not to make laws or determine policy, but to influence the public mind in the interest of same large social transformation” (Richard Hoftstader). However Richard Hoftstader contrasts the role of an agitator with the role of a politician. Wendell Phillips was much like William Lloyd Garrison.…

In the drama Naked Lunch by Michael Hollinger, Lucy and Vernon are having dinner together to reconcile after breaking up. However, their dinner is very unusual with Vernon forcing Lucy to eat steak after saying she was a vegetarian after they broke up. Vernon forcing Lucy to eat the steak and Lucy eventually losing her will to fight back with Vernon can imply that Vernon used to abuse Lucy, and will continue to abuse Lucy. Vernon is just like the alligator that he talks about in the beginning of the drama, a predator that cannot be tamed, and Lucy is the poodle that is a prey compared to the alligator and can be trained. Vernon is basically trying to train Lucy, a girl who is a pushover and is willing to go through change, to become the girl that Vernon expects her to be and he achieves this through abuse.…

The poem by Margret Atwood, “Marrying the Hangman” exemplifies the conception of humiliation, commendably sanctioning the metamorphosing societal values. Effectively perceiving the perception of deception and guilt. Marrying the Hangman is fused by history which in turn invoked the official, written history of a woman who escaped sentence of death by convincing a condemned man to accept the position of hangman and to marry her, and the oral history of a violent encounter, shared among other women: "These things happen and we sit at a table and tell stories about them so we can finally believe." Atwood demonstrates a remarkable determination to confront humiliation in her poetry. The historical poem “Marrying the Hangman” includes a related observation: An example illustrating the humiliation she withholds, “To live in prison is to live without mirrors.…
