The mirrors show the truth that is hidden and concealed; in others words disguised from the world. The hall keeps all the truth, good, and information is concealed. As the character steps deeper into the hall, the character past and truth is revealed. The mirrors show and are like a period of reflection. They show how the character, in this case Ambrosio, reflects off of other characters and relates to them.
The “hall of mirrors” is a representative of doubling and reflection. Ambrosio has a two-sided personality. As the novel continues his side of evilness progresses into more and more and becomes more prevalent. His doubling feature is this two sided personality. His one side is being all good and faithful and the other side being committed to the devil and being evil. Doubling is a key feature in his wrongdoing. Doubling is hypocritical since he is supposed to be a good, priest-like and faithful character but does the exact opposite.
He doubles off the character of Matilda, whom turns out to be a satanic figure who persuades him into wrong. Matilda first begins to interest him and becomes the object of his affection.
