Analysis: The Great Electro Magnet Race

The Great Electro Magnet Race is designed to teach Ms. Rayburn’s fourth grade class about electromagnets and magnetism. The main point for the students to learn will be that certain metals possess an electromagnetic force and can attract other types of metals by their electromagnetic field. Teaching the students about how electromagnets work and what magnetism will surely get them more interested in STEM education. The children need to understand more about engineering design as well as creative thinking. To accomplish this task, students will create a battery powered electromagnet and participate in the competition. Second the class will be observe the demonstration. Next the children will be taught how the competition will go. The class will then be separated into groups at random, which will take about five minutes at most. Later the teams will be given ten to fifteen minutes to think and construct their electromagnets. Next the teams will begin the competition racing across the floor using their created magnets to pick up paper clips and placing them in the drop zone. After 60 seconds the competition will be over and the paper clips will be counted. The winners will receive candy for their accomplishments, and the competition will take about ten minutes. If there is a draw the same competition will be repeated over with the teams that tied. Every team will get candy for participation as well. Lastly the students will tested to see how much they have learned doing this project and question if this has sparked any interests in STEM education.
