The Greasers from S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders is an example of a gang. The Glee Club is an example of a club. Although gang and club are related in meaning: an association or organization dedicated to a particular interest or activity, they differ in connotation.
The word gang is connoted by when, where, and why it is used. Gang is often used when a murder or vicious crime is committed. Gang is used in big cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago where crime is common. Gang is used for the purpose of describing a group of people engaging in criminal activity. Gang has a negative connotation associated with it.
The word club is connoted by when, where, and why it is used. Club is often used when a group of people gather to make quilts or read books.
