It’s being a year to stay in India’s one of the most dynamic landscape that keep changes throughout the year, but it is still amusing me daily. Vast silent plains with miles of visibility that is only broken sometimes by clouds of dust, “Merage” shining on horizon gives a feel of water but no water available nowhere. Mosaic of Creaks on the plains shows the scarcity of moisture even in soil. Rising temperature in summer makes this habitat even harsh for life to survive. This is the Grasslands of Banni, one of the Asia’s largest and dynamic grassland ecosystems in India. Intense rain of monsoon put a shallow blanket of water across the landscape once in a year that gives relief to its inhabitants. Due to high water holding capacity of the clay, huge proportion of landscape of hundreds of miles gets waterlogged once. Heavy rain, forces the people of Banni to migrate towards uplifted areas with their cattle as their settlements get filled with water. Maldharies of Banni are expertise to live here. A bright shiny colored “Pathani suit” is the only and identical outfit of “Maldharies” of Banni. Cattles herder of Banni locally known as “Maldhari” and cattle rearing is the only profession of those people. Scorching summer vaporized the water cover of entire Banni and left behind a continuous endless white plains with scattered vegetation. May and June are the hottest month here and temperature goes up to around 50˚C sometimes. Even in such harsh condition life in Banni is capable to survive even without water. Crepuscular Desert fox know all about, that is must to survive in such harsh climate. It barely drinks water and feed mostly on insect and succulent plants.
