There are some things that people need to be able to thrive in the cruel world we live in today. Will Allen wrote the book, The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, and Communities, and in this book he made some interesting analogies that interesting enough, alluded to these. Will Allen is a former pro basketball player, now he spends his time and money trying to make a difference in his town by trying to urbanize farming in a economically friendly manner. Allen talks a lot about food obviously, the book is mostly about his farming and food revolution, but he also talks about family and how crucial it is to have a strong family setting backing you up. Will Allen’s book outlines how crucial certain things are to maintaining a prosperous lifestyle, two of the most vital factors in gaining this lifestyle are: a strong family backbone, and easy access to healthy food. In Allen’s book, The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, and Communities, the subjects of family and food are mentioned quite a bit. Allen says, “You couldn’t place folks in the middle of a blighted neighborhood—without a strong family unit and without easy access to healthy food—and expect them to thrive. If you could create an environment in which people felt secure and healthy, though, you could provide the possibility of a better life” (121). These two facts go hand in hand in a way. When someone comes from a strong family based background, more than likely that family is doing all they can to provide the absolute best from them and teach them right from wrong. Family isn’t necessarily being related by blood either; Allen’s story describes his employees as though they are family, and tries to emphasize this with personal notes and stories about them and their relationships. His groups’ goal is very clear; they want to produce and provide easy access to their community in order to make it seem even more like a family setting. A family setting is very nice because it allows everyone to feel like they have someone that truly cares about them. A family setting is truly the key to unlocking a thriving lifestyle when one has family they are near unstoppable.
