Life is needed and in “Heaven and Nature” by Edward Hoagland the value of life decreases to some “people not only lose faith in their talents and in their dreams or values; some simply tire of them.” (Hoagland 508). In the first essay by Porter, people values their lives and wanted to find the best way to stay safe by constantly worrying about their future but in this essay, Hoagland makes the observation that as people get older and began to look back on their lives, suicide becomes a more viable option to a person’s problems. Many people, when they reflect the choices that they have made, a question arises that never goes away, what if. Life is all about choices. There are different types of suicides “there are desperate suicides and crafty suicides, people who do it to cause others trouble and people who did it to save others from trouble...” (Hoagland 508). In the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, the devastations that result in war are exemplified by the protagonist, Paul Baümer and his comrades. The devastations of war are incredibly prevalent throughout the entire novel. From the death of friends to the desensitization of seeing a corpse or a brutal injury, death is so prominent in his life that Paul has even personified ‘him.’ The tragic effect of war is highlighted through Paul’s irrationality, vulnerability, and insanity when he states, “But the shelling is stronger than everything. It wipes out the sensibilities, I merely crawl still deeper in the coffin, it should protect me, and especially as Death himself lies in it too” (4.88, Remarque).…

War is a very controversial topic around the world, many people agreeing upon the need for war, but then others seeing the idea from an entirely different perspective. Sara Teasdale very blatantly puts her opinion out in her poem “There Will Come Soft Rain,” where she clearly paints out a beautiful scene to the reader, before abruptly connecting the peaceful flora and fauna she was describing, to this idea or war and the Earth. Teasdale’s poem, using familiar imagery, continuous structure, and meaningful alliteration, emphasizes her argument that in the long run, no matter what human conflict or war, the Earth will continue, with or without us. One of the most apparent forms of literary technique Teasdale uses is imagery. She specifically uses imagery that if familiar to the average person, like in the first stanza of her poem, when it reads, “There will come…
