Linda Tirando, currently settled in Washington DC, is one out of approximately 50 million people in the United States living in poverty. She has tried to give an explanation on why poor people seem so self-destructive and take poor decisions. She describes poverty as a vicious circle: the longer you stay in it, the less likely it becomes that you will ever get out. Tirando was not born into poverty, but she was simply unlucky and made the wrong decisions when she was only a young adult. Too many bills, dropping out of college, unemployment. You have to understand that we know that we will never not feel tired. We will never feel hopeful. We will never get a vacation. Ever.” By being precise with short sentences and use intense words such as “never” repeatedly, the reader truly get familiarized with living in poverty. Especially the space between the lines gives the reader a lot of time to think about her text. The text attempts to light up poverty as a societal problem. Tirando believes that financially comfortable people have a wrong view on why the poor cannot get out of poverty because having her explanation in mind; you realize how great problem poverty is. Getting out of poverty is clearly not that easy, and it is a huge societal problem in the United States and Great Britain: 1/3 of Americans and 1/5 of people in Great Britain are poor. Tirando does not seek any sympathy, only to give a fairly explanation on poverty from an insider-knowledge. It can be a difficulty to make oneself acquainted with poor people when you do not live in it. According to Tirando the great problem of poverty and downward mobility must be emphasized and the filthy work poor people make has to be dignified and get respect and job security.
Smoking is an expensive stimulant that can provide a small amount of relaxation, which is the only reason why Tirando continues smoking.
