A World of Plastic In the hour long documentary, TOXIC: Garbage Island by Thomas Morton, a group of adults venture to the North Pacific gyre for 21 days to find a spinning current with tons of chemicals and plastics that will not biodegrade in order to show society how serious plastic pollution is. Throughout the documentary, the VICE team documents the plastic that has polluted the Pacific Ocean. The main argument that is used in the documentary is that most Americans do not think about plastic pollution and its devastating effects. Plastic is used every single day by Americans and has become a very large industry. This means, according to the VICE crew, billions of plastic items per year are released into the ocean. Another argument made by the voyagers, is that the plastic, and the chemicals that may be in or on the plastic, negatively effects the ecosystems and the organisms living inside of it. The last major argument that Thomas Morton uses is that the plastic pollution that has already taken over the ocean, is irreversible. The issue of plastic pollution also negatively effects our ocean life, producing diseases and defects in fish and other creatures living in the ocean. These plastic polymers that are ingested by animals are so small that they are almost impossible to see and clean up. These plastic polymers and the chemicals that come with them cause irreversible damage to our oceans and make it an unrealistic option to dispose of the tons of litter. TOXIC: Garbage Island is able to document the seriousness of plastic pollution through the negative effects of it on our oceans and ocean life, and the shocking facts that these effects caused irreversible
