As Tom thinks back, he regrets all of those things he had done. He had made an enormous mistake for not going with his wife. Not to mention this, as he was about to leave and find his wife, the paper got his attention because, “He saw the yellow paper, the pencil flying, scooped off the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window, sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter” (134).
