The document “The Crime Poverty” was written by Henry George. Henry George is a traveling typewriter and newspaper editor. He had book called Progress and Poverty that made him super famous. The book made him so famous he ran for mayor twice in New York. It was written on April 1, 1885. It was delivered in an opera house in Burlington, Iowa.

The intended to do was tell the people that poverty is a crime like murder is a crime. That we are killings people because of the wealth all being in one spot and not all spread out, so everyone could live and eat. The working people were the poor people. He also said the working people lived in the poorest houses. He thinks we need to have wealth evenly around to everyone. He thinks it is unfair to give a fine to a poor girl who worked hard all week and then owed money after the long hard week. He said this “She told me of one poor girl who really worked hard one week and made $3.50; but the fines against her were $5.25. That seems ridiculous; it is ridiculous, but it is pathetic, and it is shameful.” (Arnove &Zinn, 2014 pg. 218). This goes to show how the people in poverty can not afford anything. He thinks everyone needs to have land and a pension. If he can get that to happen than poverty can stopped. Henry said “As an English friend of mine puts it: No taxes and a pension for everybody; and why should it not be? To take land values for public purposes is not really to impose a tax, but to take for public purposes a value created by the community.” (Arnove &Zinn, 2014 pg. 217). I feel all these points could be used as argument to stop poverty, but also could be used to argue as point that it would be hard to make this happen in this kind of government system. I feel this source is credible to the view Henry George and since he has a book. I would use his speech in my paper if I was talking about
