Church Observation

I associate myself to be Christian, Baptist to be exact. The Church I attended on Sunday the 23rd of October is called St. Michaels Archangel Church in downtown Greenville. Their religion is Coptic Orthodox and in comparison to my own church, it was very different. The Coptic Orthodox Church I attended was very traditional and so much was happening. To compare their Church to my own church, I will briefly describe the procedures and beliefs of my own. There are usually 2-3 services offered every Sunday and sometimes people in church will get together one other day of the week to study the Bible. Each service usually lasted like an hour to an hour and a half. Everyone that comes in seats themselves wherever they would like, whether it be with …show more content…
Usually a priest will lead the service but this was a special occasion because the bishop came. The bishop and the priest split the sections, since he was there. They read mostly from their holy liturgy book and the service was filled with the congregations responses to the priest’s and bishop’s readings from it. The interesting part was that they did not use just one language during the service, they used three; English, Arabic, and Coptic. As they read from the book, they would read it out loud but in more of a singing/chanting way. There was only a brief time period where they would speak without chanting, the rest of the time they would sing. As each section was read, the congregation (that is people in the audience, watching and responding to the priest) would change their position. Sometimes they would sit, other times they would stand, and a few times they would bow their heads as they sit, almost touching their head to the chairs in front of …show more content…
A cloth like napkin is given out to anyone who is taking communion and this is so that no crumbs are dropped. Communion is very sacred and everything needs to be consumed. The wine is also treated the same. After communion, they pray. The bishop walks around after the prayer spraying the congregation with holy water. The water was a bit cold so it surprised me when I was sprinkled with it, but when I looked around many people were smiling and happy to be blessed with the bishops presence and his sprinkling them with holy water. At the very end, everyone lines up to greet the priest but since the bishop was there, we greeted him. When you are in front of him, you take his hand, kissing it and the cross that is in his that same hand. It happened so fast and I did not know I was suppose to kiss the cross that I barely even kissed his hand. He also hands you a gift, and it is different each time but we received a key chain with the bishop on

As the church service came to a close, one of the leaders asked for the congregation to circle around their Pastors and pray for them. Most of the church went to the front alter and prayed for their Pastor. I found it unique, although it made me feel a little uncomfortable because I didn’t want to go pray for him because I was not a member of the church. At the same time it also made me feel a little awkward because I was one of the few people still at the their chair. After the lengthy prayer ended, the Pastor lovingly thanked his congregation and dismissed in…

We are supposed to have daily prayer, whether it be in private or during a church service. Our prayers can be almost about anything. We can pray for forgiveness, for other people, and for guidance just to name a few things often prayed about. Christians also study the scripture on a daily basis. Although it is not five times a day it it still something that is done daily to help them further develop in their…

I attend Rollins Church of Christ in Longview, Texas where the pastor is Reverend Ricky Lawler. We are a small place of worship which holds usually 85 to 100 people on Sunday Service. We had the option to choose to go to a Catholic church or Charismatic church. On November 5th, 2014 a fellow classmate and I decided to attend Wednesday night service at Houston Faith Church, a non-denominational Charismatic church, in Houston Texas.…

With all of the congregation drinking out of the same wine glass, this intrigued me to ask the friend I came with why this happens. She told me this is to keep the tradition of the last supper, as Jesus drank from a cup then passed it around to the disciples to share. Catholics are trying to imitate this continuous type of ritual within the drinking of the same cup as a whole of religious members. Within asking these members of the church these few questions, it left me with more of a sense of who they are as a religious society and why they chose to worship God as Catholic…

On August 23, 2015 I attend a local Maysville church not far from where I live to complete the church visitation assignment. I choose to attend Grants Creek Missionary Baptist Church, because it is located in a quaint building out in the country and not to mention a different denomination than myself. This church is of a Baptist denomination, which is unique because it is the denomination of Campbell University. I thought this project would be a great opportunity for me to become more diverse in my faith and discover more about the Baptist culture. It all started on the Wednesday prior to the twenty-third when on my way home I seen cars at the church, so I decided to stop in and meet the pastor and let him know that my intention was…

They discuss about it during the mass as well. I asked around and was informed that Catholics sing and discuss about the reading of the Bible during the mass most of the time. In my Cultural Plunge Picture figure 5, it shows a photo of the mass schedule which listed the Bible reading assignment for each mass. Towards the end of the ceremony, the priest asked everyone to hold hands and pray as well as introduce ourselves to the ones around us. Towards the end of the mass, I noticed that was a basket that was passing around to collect money.…

Sabrina Dang Mr. Zelenak Religion IV 28 September 2016 Communion Rite "Come to the table of mercy, prepared with the wine and the bread. All who are hungry and thirsty, come and your soul will be fed." This verse from the song,"Come to the Table," perfectly describes communion because Jesus called himself the,"Bread of Life," which meant that we are nourished by Him, and He satisfies us when everything else leaves us empty. The journey toward the altar to receive Communion reflects on the journey we all have towards God. Communion is an important part of the mass that has been celebrated for over many centuries.…

Once the bread and wine is finished, different individuals get up and speak about events going on in the church and after they finish everyone sings while the priest and children leave. After they have left everyone else is allowed to exit. One interesting thing that takes place as the individuals leave the church is that they get Holy water and make a cross on their forehead. Everything that was observed during this mass helped me to understand the Catholic individual’s way of Christianity, which will help me with the final for this course (hopefully). There are a few similarities between my Baptist Christianity Religion and Catholicism.…
