10,000, that’s the number of people Coalition for the Homeless helps each year get through crisis and 3,500 homeless men, women and children each day. So many people go to sleep each day with out a meal or a bed to rest on. In most case these people just need a meal for strength to start building their lives back up. Coalition for the Homeless is the starting point for many of those in need and it is a way for them to learn to get back to being able to support themselves. The charity offers several different types of programs that help the needy get food, clothing and jobs but also help the community learn how to support and give back. Each year during the holidays Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are held for people in need to attend. Kids get to enjoy a family meal and a chance to sit on Santa’s lap, and for that short day they forget of all the troubles they have been through. Many homeless shelters tear families apart because they can’t house an entire family, therefore kids are forced to enter the foster system and loose their families. But through the Family programs coalition for the Homeless is able to stable and keep together a family until they can provide for their own. “The Coalition prides itself on its ability to keep families together during their time of crisis.” (Coalition for The Homeless, Webpage) But keeping families together is not all the charity is known for. They are very well known for being able to ensure a person in crisis is able to go back to a steady life with out depending on someone else for help. “The classroom provides Coalition clients access to an array of adult educational opportunities to enhance their employment potential.” (Coalition for The Homeless, Webpage) Through these educational programs people are able to gain there GED and entire college to earn AA, AS, or even Bachelors in areas of their choosing. By doing so they are able to enter the work force with experience and education to be able to exceed in their lives. This allows them to be able to support not only themselves but their families. Staying at the institution for long is never the plan, programs are meant to get the people out and steady as soon as possible. “Coalition clients who demonstrate economic and employment stability, along with a required amount of savings for the future, are moved into the community through the Scattered Site Housing Program.” (Coalition for The Homeless, Webpage) Programs like this one allow the needy to set goals and be able to

    These programs are excellent because some homeless families need a little more time and focusing supports to get themselves stable before they move in their permanent housing. I think these programs have strong commitment to provide safety and stability while encouraging families involved with “self-exploration, professional skill-building and personal growth, leading to emotional well-being, self-reliance and full membership in the larger community”.
