The author, Marie Lu, took her time with her characters’ shifting motives, which makes the story even more credible and satisfying. The protagonists may be caricatures, defined by their safely bland appeal, and appear to significantly change with unshakably noble values at heart while they juxtapose against the villainous Republic. While Day wreaks Havoc on the Republic, June alone has the ability and determination to stop him, making her the only person to ever pass the Trial’s with a score of 1500, and she has excelled in all her decisions and garnered the attention of top military commanders since that triumphant day. The gap between the rich and the poor is massive, and many live on the streets; there are constant outbreaks of ever mutating plagues that only affect the poor sectors, since rich people can afford to be vaccinated or purchase a cure if they catch it. Even though families like June’s get to live in fancy homes with over the top clothes, the poor people are living in relative misery and poverty. I can connect to this because the ever mutating plague is related to a huge issue right now; Ebola is fueled by poverty and poor governance, and they are living much like the poor sectors described in the novel. Many countries slide deeper into poverty under the weight of dictatorship and corruption, and put them in severe risk. Both Day and June lost their family members, even though they come from vastly different circumstances; however, June did not sympathize and neglected the loss of Day’s parents at first, while Day is more respectful and responsible towards his family. He risks his life to take care of his family, but when they are brutally murdered right in front of him, he works against the Republic to avenge his family. I also deeply care about my family and am determined to help them in whatever way I can if they are experiencing troubles. She succeeded significantly in incorporating different themes such as betrayal, poverty, and commitment, through various events that held adrenaline fueled action. She definitely succeeded in spinning a rich story about revolution, making it fast paced and cinematic. Her goal was to also turn the characters into full fledged rebels that would be able to understand in a world that is hard to imagine, which she successfully was able to
