There are major medical applications of cannabis particularly in relations to terminal illnesses where the conventional treatments are proven as rather inadequate. There are testimonies of patients in Australia claiming the effectiveness or potential effectiveness of medical cannabis in providing relief for multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, asthma, cancer and chronic pain. Effectiveness of medical cannabis is dependence upon its cultivation, preparation and method of consumption. MGC will promote public health through the reduced side effects of medical cannabis treatment applying the CBD research. Cultivation of medical specific cannabis with more CBD reduce the risk of it being used for illegal purposes without the psychoactive effects. Overall, MGC will contribute to improving well-being of the public with limited potential misuse.
Purpose
The project aims to effect the dual mandate of having the aforementioned social and economic benefits for the sector generally and for MGC. The CCA will help capture the social and economic opportunities. The project will create a framework for setting up the peak body in medical cannabis industry that the future group could fill in the gaps before actual implementation.
Objectives and scope
After discussion with the client, the project will focus on how the peak body would operate once it is being established. Three main deliverables were created composed of the membership application form, code of excellence and recommendation report. This can be accomplished through analysing the main function areas and roles of the peak bodies. This section draws on the importance of each roles and research on established peak bodies in Australia in other industries and internationally. The recommendation report proposes best practice of the roles consisting of policy development, consultation with the government, advocacy and representation of the interests of all stakeholders in the industry, information dissemination within the sector, community education, sector consultation, promote coordination and sector capacity building to enable better service delivery and functioning of organizations. Critical analysis on the roles and ways to execute the roles will assist the client or any individual reading the recommendation report to develop a better understanding of how peak bodies work and how they should work. The section proposed that the council will focus on policy development, advocacy and representation and information
