Personal Narrative: The Boxes And Walls Experience

Everybody is different. At least that is one of the most common things I hear from either my parents, friends, teachers, advisors, etc. If everyone was the same, we may as well all be robots. But we aren’t robots, we’re all unique in our own way. Since everyone is unique in their own way, we discover and become friends with the people who have similar interests and/or live similar lifestyles. Last week, I went to the Boxes and Walls experience at Esker Hall not knowing what to expect. Throughout the tour, I was taken back by how much I did not know about the different groups of people, and what they go through on a day-to-day basis. It was as if I discovered an entirely new world unbeknownst to me. The Boxes and Walls experience gave me insight …show more content…
The African-American room is what really touched me. At first, I had no clue whether or not the guy saying the racist things to the black woman in our room was playing a role or not. The guy was pretty good at acting and made me loathe him until I figured out he was just acting. I had some doubt, but I was soon able to catch on. The acting helped paint a portrait of the evils of discrimination and also was a reminder for everyone to be aware of how prevalent an issue it is. They went on to further examine how racist some of the media can be by showing various clips of news reporters saying racist things. The discrimination being presented was disgusting but truthful to how arrogant people behave. The entire situation makes me feel sorry for black people, while again showing me how my life is not as bad as I make it to be. When I worry about something, it is whether or not I forget to study for a test or do a homework assignment. Not only do black people have to worry about the little things I worry about, but they also have to deal with discrimination and their lives being at risk just because of their

For the Jane Elliot video, the scene I think I will remember is when the African-American man finally spoke up. He made a very good point about how he cannot pick his daughter up from school because he feared she would be treated differently if he did. This impacted me and I believe that it impacted many of the white participants in the video. I will remember this moment because it taught me how African-Americans feel about our society.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
