I admired her for wanting her way of life and how she refused to take part in what a woman should be in the society. Due to the death of Chicken Little, I believe that Nellie clung to the social convention because she did not want others to judge her or see her as a “bad” person. Thus, she conformed into the society. She also did it because wanted to reestablish herself as a good person. Meanwhile, Sula, in the other hand, mourned for Chicken Little’s death and moved on with her life. In addition, it is ironic to see how “the bottom” drastically changed when Sula past away. In the beginning, the whole community unites against Sula and her action. Sula existence made them become “good” people. For example, when Teapot fell down the steps, Betty told everyone that Sula pushed Teapot down. After what happened, Teapot’s mother got lots of attention, started to care for Teapot, and became the most devoted mother. Ironically, that did not last long. After the death of Sula, Betty began to beat Teapot. Sula, herself, play a major role in the lives of these people who live at the bottom. I chose this word because social norm plays a huge role in people life. It shapes individuals and influences their behavior. For instance, Nellie conformed into the society. She also lives her life abide by the community’s expectation. She got married and children. Meanwhile, Sula, on the other hand, refused to comply with the community’s expectation. “She does not want to make anybody else and only want to make herself.” From my perspective, I can sense that Sula wants to create and control her identity. She does not want anyone to determine who she is as a person. She wants people to remember her as “Sula” and not the "Sula" that they think she should
