I utilized the desks for the set creating the stage area with them, Brown’s house, the “forest” and rooms, and the platform. In the costumes there is this idea of rigidness, and corporate dress adapted for the night. While attempting to remain fairly conservative each garment has a darker more seductive side with lush velvets and silks chosen as the main fabrics alongside suiting. The main color scheme of the production being red, white, black, and grey also brings you right into the rich world the characters inhabit. Which ties directly to my take of this being far more seductive and enticing than in the story. Hawthorne is using the story to show the hypocrisy of the world, but I’m using the story to display how feeble the faith of a single person can be when their back is against the wall. My other goal is to showcase how seductive the wrong thing is, and how it appeals to us all.
Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story that shows how even those in our lives who seem to be straightlaced have a darker side than expected, and we must remain faithful to our own beliefs because no one else will. The use of allegory to express this creates the perfect world to show this, and also is a great way to display so many different takes on the story. My version is just one of many
