She is known to have helped many people with her abilities. She collects herbs and plants for her medicines, and it’s known from the first chapter that she aided Antonio’s mother for all six of her pregnancies. She has both physical and “magical” abilities that allow her to help others in need, I say magical because she knew what Antonio saw down in the river despite staying within the house. Yet, It’s known that Ultima is a curandera, not a witch. The Concern between Antonio’s future stemmed from what should have been done to his afterbirth; if the afterbirth was buried he would follow the ways of the valley people like his mother, yet if they were turned to ash and spread within the Illano he would be free like his forefathers. With time the conflict had come to whether Antonio would grow up to be a priest and help his people as his mother wanted, or become a vaquero and roam the lands freely like his father did. The only one who was the deciding factor in his parents’ conflict and knew Antonio’s future was Ultima though
The only pet that Ultima brought with her was an owl. It’s the same owl that use to scare Antonio and his sister’s when they heard it hooting at night. Yet Antonio now began to find the owl comforting as if the owl watched over him to protect

Even though it is not directly said Ultima is the owl it is perceptible that the owl symbolizes Ultima’s soul. The owl is seen multiple times throughout the book soothing, protecting, or keeping watch over other characters in the novel. It has that sense of a positive connotation. Antonio explains how the owl alleviates his fears when he says “I realized that the owl had been with me throughout the night... The relationship shared by Lincoln and Booth in Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks encompasses both negative and positive aspects. Similar positivity is portrayed more dominantly in Jack and Teresa’s loving relationship in “The View from Culion,” a short story in Monstress by Lysley Tenorio, while Tita and Mama Elena’s destructive relationship in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquirel demonstrates more negative characteristics. Out of the three works, the repulsive way Mama Elena treats Tita illustrates how this work is the most destructive due to the physical, emotional, and mental harm that is caused. While not as harmful as Tita and Mama Elena’s situation, Lincoln and Booth live a tragic life that brings hard feelings and cruel, impulsive actions between the two brothers at times. Although, deep down the brothers exhibit glances of a deep love and affection they have towards one another and their past.…

As Noble Prize winner, Jose Saramago once said, “Things will be very bad for Latin America. You only have to consider the ambitions and the doctrines of the empire, which regards this region as its backyard”. While powerful nations like the United States were increasing their national income by taking advantage of the recourses their neighboring countries had to offer, it was destroying the economic balance within those countries by making the rich more successful and the poor suffer more. Throughout the novel One Day of Life, Manlio Argueta portrays the Cold War in Latin America as a time of desperation for the poor and as a time of capital greed. Through the eyes of the main character, Lupe Guardado, this novel illustrates the daily internal…

In the dream Antonio’s expectations are presented through the words of his brothers, “You are a Luna, they chanted in unison, you are to be a farmer-priest for mother!” (Anaya 26). This statement reveals the expectations set specifically for Antonio; he is to be specifically what his mother tells him, and through the use of punctuation the statement is presented in a way that can be compared to an order. Furthermore, the dream reveals Antonio’s own opinion in response to his brother’s orders in the form of an analogy. Through Anaya’s words, “The doves came to drink in the still ponds of the river and their cry was mournful in the darkness of my dream.”…

Equality is something that is perpetually strived for, but seldom achieved. In the novella The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the protagonist, Esperanza, does not want to continue the cycle of inequality. Throughout the story, Esperanza continually sees women in her life treated like objects in a society that values women for their looks, and not for what is on the inside. In the thread of gender roles, a theme that is developed is that men do not treat women as their equals, but instead as something that can be possessed and dominated. This theme is developed throughout the stories Esperanza tells about her great-grandmother’s resentment of being a married woman, Rafaela’s lack of freedom in her marriage, and the troubles Minerva…

Born in a family of Mexican immigrants, Sandra Cisneros discovers her niche in the American literature by writing from her experience as an immigrant growing at the confluence of two cultures. Until her teenager years, Cisneros’ family moves back and forth from Chicago to Mexico, making her feel not integrated in either culture. As Robin Ganz declares, Cisneros “derived inspiration from her cultural specificity and found her voice in the dingy rooms of her house on Mango Street, on the cruel but comfortable streets of the barrio, and in the smooth and dangerous curves of borderland arroyos” (1). In her short story, “Woman Hollering Creek”, Cisneros describes the life of a Mexican woman, Cleofilas that marries a man from “el otro lado” in the…

He cannot escape it, but he may reform the old materials, make something new” (Anaya 247).
