An Apology For Poetry Analysis

In every person’s life, a chain of events happens that allow the individual to mold themselves into a reflection of their representation of the world they live in. This may be through different gestures, as they can vary from each community to everyday symbols and objects we have come to associate with one another. Victor Shklovsky would argue that in order to see something from a new perspective, what is presented to the audience has to go through the process of defamiliarization. Within his argument, he suggests that poetry is the root of all art. Poetry enlightens the reader by igniting virtue, which he argues is “the first light-giver to ignorance” (CITE). Sidney makes the point to address that historians were poets, but the poet affirms nothing so he can’t lie. Contrary to this belief, history does not teach virtue. Poetry should appeal to emotion rather than reading. Through poetry, the work itself should imitate virtuous actions. Virtuous actions meaning that the morals and ideals within poetry should reflect ethical, high moral standards. Therefore, to reject poetry would mean rejecting the foundations of culture and intelligence. Additionally, Sidney believes poetry’s main function is to teach and delight. Similarly, this is what Rogers’ does with his television show and his own works of literature. Although poetry should imitate art, Sidney is not suggesting that the art itself is any sort of reproduction. Instead, he believes that it should be a representation of reality.
