The book discusses about the example about leadership where employees start from the bottom that lead them to higher positions. It discusses about the old paradigm of leadership where the employees are at the foot of the pyramid, and as you move up in position as supervisors, managers, vice presidents and the president and shows an inverted pyramid with employees at the top, on down to the president. At the bottom is keen, then adoration, dignity and respect, authority and leadership is at the top. Through provision one figures authority or encouragement with someone, and once that is acknowledged, then you earn the right to be a leader. One of my previous company commanders abused his power that lead to a life of the soldier. While we are conducting driver training on a sergeant time, all 12B MOS (Combat Engineer) will train and drive the M113 vehicles. After getting all the combat engineer trained, He decided to get everybody drive the M113 too with all the support MOS in the Headquarters. But the Motor Pool Sergeant told him to get a familiarization class first before driving. The Company Commander told him that everybody needs to get to drive since we are all in an Engineering Company. Since, he doesn’t want to listen and he put his power to force “Do it or I’ll fire you’ situation. He let the Motor Sergeant TC his PFC who just got in the unit that month. After getting around from a 500-meter distance, they went to curve and the driver loses control and hit the tree that fell to the head of the TC motor sergeant and killed him instantly. I will not forget that scenario because I’m next one in line to drive that M113 Tracked Vehicle. I don’t know what will happen to me because I have no idea how to drive that tracked vehicle too. Sometime as a leader we tend to forget how we lead the soldier and the ability to force or pressure soldier into action, even if their hearts are against it, because of the position they may have.
