Janie's A Monster Under My Monster: A Short Story

The monster hadn’t always been there, under the bed. Or maybe it had been. Janie hadn’t noticed its presence immediately. It had only come around at night, when the four year old was fast asleep, protected by the soft embrace of dreamland and the warm wool of her lilac covers. Even if those two forms of safety had failed to do their job, her mother would take their place. Janie knew she would. She always would, Janie’s Mama Bear. Her mother would never have let her Sweetpea be harmed by the beast who had lurked angrily beneath the bed. But when Janie first heard the monster, she never knew of this.

Janie’s father was making his way to the door when her mother called out softly,“Have a nice day at work. Dinner will be ready when you come home.”
There was a disgruntled mutter before the sound of the front door closing could be heard throughout the home. Just a regular

The second “wolf” in this story is drastically subtler than the outwardly terrifying worm creature, this wolf is less physical and more conceptual. This ferocious and terrifying “wolf” is the universally known terrible feeling that we call grief. Grief is defined as “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret.” This definition fits perfectly with the story presented in Emily Carroll’s “Through the Woods” in the short story “The Nesting Place”. Our dreary yet relatable main character Mabel, or Bel, is not only haunted by the monster in this story; she is also haunted by the grief that comes with the loss of her mother.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
