On the other hand, if you look past this sinful layer you’ll sympathize with the characters, this is about more than just the morality of life. Towards the end of the story, moral corruption and degeneration was in truth an accurate picture of the realities of life. Anton wanted to tell the readers that the situation between Dmitri and Anna wasn’t so farfetched, in reality this could happen to the most moral of person. Love is a strong force, and when it knocks at your door marriage and family won’t hold you back. In truth, chances of cheating increase when there is trouble at home, unhappy or discontented marriages are bound to have extra-marital affair. If you interact with a stranger more than you do your partner on a daily basis for long periods of time, this can possibly attract you more to another person. He is a realist, although he didn’t say cheating or promiscuity is okay, he did emphasize that when people are unhappy, this is the reality of life. He tells a story and refuses to judge the characters or attempt to offer suggestions on how to improve their situation. Instead, Dmitri and Anna accept their reality and live double lives, one open for to the public eye the other their dirty little secret. I enjoyed this novel because of the fact that although they know their ending might not be happy, what ultimately matters to them is enjoying each other’s company.
