Friendship In The Hobbit

Often time’s soldiers in war create special bonds with each other, which often times seem to be a necessity of survival. In the book “The Hobbit,” Bilbo Baggins goes on a perilous journey with a party of twelve other dwarves, and during this journey a brotherhood is created between these two very different peoples. This may just be comradeship, because Verweii, a writer on military ethics, notes that “comrades in arms come to feel an intense love for one another.” The connection between Bilbo and the dwarves is purely comradeship and not friendship. While there is a care for one another, Bilbo is not truly friends of the dwarves only there companion on this odyssey. Bilbo is being carried by and Bombur complains about “why did [he] ever bring a wretched little hobbit on a treasure hunt.” The dwarves are just tolerating Biblo at this point. When he falls off the dwarves back, no one checks to even make sure he is still following them. While escaping the clutches the of the goblins, after he was separated from the dwarves, Bilbo thought about trying to get back to the dwarves. Bilbo began to feel this love that Verweii talks about. Bilbo takes the Arkenstone as his 14th of the treasure, and give it away so the men and elves have something to sway the greed within Thorin. This shows the companionship and not friendship. If Bilbo was a friend of the dwarves, he would never have done this. He is simply a comrade of theirs, and he gave the stone away because he does not want any violence to happen. This was more of a noble act than an act of friendship. There is still connection between Bilbo and the dwarves. When he finished talking to Thorin “he wept until his eyes were red and his voice was hoarse” . Thorin died and Bilbo was happy that he got to see him one last time. In the evening Bilbo is offered a chance to eat dinner with the dwarves but he declines. The relationship is purely comradeship. A friend would have stayed, but to Bilbo the mission had been completed. He is polite and lets them know that they are always welcome, but he still wants to leave as soon as he can.
