Ever wondered what it would feel like to have an extra toe. In the novel, The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, it is a novel about a deviational boy named David that can talk to people him through telepathically transmitted thought shapes. He lives in a post-apocalyptic society called Waknuk. Soon he meets a deviational girl named Sophie who has 6 toes. He promises to keep her extra toe a secret. Everything is well, until a boy named Alan finds out their secret. When they feel that their secret can no longer be a secret, they plan to send Sophie to the fringes. Anyone that is found guilty against god is banished to the fringes. One of these deviants was Joseph storms brother, who was sent to the fringes because he had abnormally long arms. This made him jealous of his brother and led him to kill joseph in chapter 16 Also, in chapter 5 David was persecuted and then he ran away to the fringes, in result the Waknuk people tortured sally and Catherine killing them both.
