Ever wondered what it would feel like to have an extra toe. In the novel, The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, it is a novel about a deviational boy named David that can talk to people him through telepathically transmitted thought shapes. He lives in a post-apocalyptic society called Waknuk. Soon he meets a deviational girl named Sophie who has 6 toes. He promises to keep her extra toe a secret. Everything is well, until a boy named Alan finds out their secret. When they feel that their secret can no longer be a secret, they plan to send Sophie to the fringes. Everything is fine until the arrival of his little sister Petra. David finds out that Petra can also make thing picture, only stronger than David. When Petra’s think pictures and distress calls get out of hand, the group decides to train her. They are all doing well until Anne announces she is going to marry Alan. The group is concerned that Anne will not be able to keep their think picture secret; Anne shuts off her mind to avoid talking to the group. This continues until Alan is found dead with an arrow in his back. This makes Anne very mad and she decides to take her own life. The month goes by in silence. Everything is quite when one day David comes home to his father in a bad mood with the inspector standing by him. They question David and make him spill his guts. With their secret revealed, they had no choice but to escape to avoid being persecuted. David, Rosalind, and Petra escape to the fringes.…
