This illustration from a chapter in the book sticks to mind. There a young man setting out on a walk, but he notices a group of people standing around looking frantic, as he goes over to see what’s happening, there he observed a young boy drowning in a lake. He jumps in without haste in pulled the child to safety. By the end of the story this young man has saved three other people from the lake. As he continues to walk an older man greet him calling him a hero and asked him why are you walking towards the hill, the young man response was to see what’s causing people to fall in the lake. This scenario left an impression what a counselor is really about, that’s an individual that will help find a solution to the problem, for the safety of their clients.

Helpers are usually a good listener, and others may often seem to feel comfortable confiding in a counselor. To the helper it’s rewarding to help other find solutions to their problems. The helper won’t always have a solution to every problem, but the support and involvement the helper brings still make a difference in the lives of their clients.
