Narrative Elements Of In The Kitchen

Many authors construct essays with different introductions and conclusions to effectively support their topic. When reading many essays, author’s use similar forms of narrative elements that are analyzed to explain the author’s purpose in writing the piece. Natalie Kusz “Ring Leader” and Jr. Gates “In the Kitchen”, have similar narrative elements throughout their introduction’s and conclusion’s which include, the voice and mood that the authors create, our trust in the author’s, and the tone of the authors, which assists the author’s to explain their purpose for writing the piece. In all, the following arguments leads to evaluate which essay is more persuasive than the other.

Her strong personality, is clear throughout the essay, which gives readers a closer insight on her experiences. “The fact is; I grew up ugly- no worse than that, I grew up unusual, that unforgivable sin among youth” (Kusz 166). This example, reflects her true and honest personality. This example, helps the audience get a clear sense of who she is and how she feels about herself. It also gives the audience a clear understanding of how the rest of her essay was written. It is clear that Kusz uses her tragic past to, catch her reader’s emotion’s, which makes her essay more persuasive. Jr. Gates essay, is about his journey of observing his mama throughout his life. This is similar to Kusz, as her essay is about her journey to becoming more self-confident. His essay was written through the perspective of a male, who also did not live an upper class and also has a strong personality, which continues throughout his conclusion. Since Natalie Kusz explains her essay through her own personal perspective of gaining self-confidence, it gives the audience a better reason to trust in her. Kusz also explains her journey through many descriptive examples, which help persuade her audience to better understand her journey. “A nose ring, they might tell you, would be my last choice for a fashion accessory, way down on the list with a sag-enhancing specialty bra or a sign on my butt reading ‘Wide Load’” (Kusz 166). This example, shows that the audience is able to trust Kusz, as she is giving her honest opinion about the nose ring she decided to get. Kusz uses descriptive examples, which helps claim her examples truthful. Jr. Gates essay is extremely similar to Kusz, as he also explains his essay through his own personal perspective of watching his mom, as he grew up. Similarly, to Kusz, Gates also uses descriptive examples, which help gain the trust of his audience. “The “hot comb” was a fine-toothed iron instrument with a long wooden handle and a pair of iron curlers that opened and closed like scissors” (Gates 273). This example shows that the audience is able to trust in Gates, as he uses detailed descriptions of the hot comb that his mother used to straighten hair.
