Of Mice and Men starts with two migrant workers, Lennie Small and George Milton walking to their place of work next to the Salinas River near Soledad. They just have escaped from a farm near Weed where Lennie was wrongly accused of raping a woman when he wanted to touch her soft dress. As they are walking George discovers that Lennie has a dead mouse inside his pocket and convinces Lennie not to speak at the new ranch. After, Lennie and George make up; George embarks on their dream of having their own patch of land with a small farm with a vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch. George tells Lennie if that he gets in any trouble at the ranch to return the river and hide in the brush. When they reach the bunkhouse, they meet an old man named Candy. …show more content…
When thought about it Lennie affects George further alters Lennie’s life. George did not have to keep his promise to Lennie’s Aunt Clara and gone on his way. George frequently speaks about how better his life would be without having to constantly babysitting Lennie. With Lennie’s small mental capacity Lennie has to be a tag along to George twenty four seven. George’s fate would have been absolutely different if he did not this responsibility. George could have a stable job, a farm for himself, a wife, and even children. Lennie acts as a barrier blocking George to move on and make a good life. Even when George killed Lennie, the tone of how the ending made it seem as though George was heartbroken and it would be difficult to proceed with life. Lennie’s death forever changed George’s idealist perspective on the world to be realistic and rational. Although, Lennie was not a minor character he had the role of a major and minor influence on George. Lennie changed how George was going to take on the world and how he sees things. It was slightly hard to follow which character are Lennie and George because of transitions in their conversations. The plot was slightly depressing because the various amounts of death in a span of six chapters but the tragedy creates a bigger shock towards the powerful ending. The bond Lennie and George have makes the readers want to find someone to connect to and share a common goal with just to have a sense of purpose. However, the shortness of the novella was exceptional because literature sometimes needs to get to the point and not run on for ages. The description on the settings especially the Salinas River created images in one’s mind making it easier to connect with the story from the beginning. This book had great detail in such a small time that made the experience enjoyable. This book will be recommended to others because the storyline being about two migrant workers going to their new
