A short story is an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot. When you as the reader analyze these findings among your contemporary or modern selections, you find that the authors and producers had much to compare and contrast as they each had their own special devices used in the stories, and differences and similarities between the works. After analyzing the selections by Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Katherine Anne Porter, the reader finds several literary components to compare and contrast between the text and the movies such as the plot, characters, and tone developed and created in each of the texts and the films that are associated with it. There are distinct differences and similarities in the plot between these short stories and their corresponding movies that go along with them. Within the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, there are many instances where the plot of the short story is completely different than its film. In the short story, when the author is providing the reader with background information on how the headless horseman came to be, he establishes that the rumor of what happened to him is that he had his head taken off by a cannonball a long time ago (Washington Irving page 17). On the contrary, the producer of the movie shows what happened to the headless horseman with his own twist on the events, and…
