Throughout the story, Juan Rulfo continuously shows the reader that the man doesn’t want to die. While he also shows that the main character will receive help from no one, the main character continuously asks for people to try and help him. Juan Rulfo also shows the back story of the main character to show the true impact of the situation. This gives an example of how he is oblivious to the situation. Through this Juan Rulfo shows how people will continue to show their will to survive, even at death’s door. In the end he finally gets caught by one of Don Lupe’s sons. Once he is caught by Don Lupe’s son, he pleads with many to help him live. Here is a clear example from page 443: “’Look at me, coronel,” he asked ’I’m not worth anything. It won’t take long for me to die all by myself, crippled by old age. Don’t kill me…!’” (Rulfo 443). The ten cows I gave the judge did me no good, nor did the bond I paid on my house to get out of jail. And they still paid themselves out of what was left so they wouldn’t keep after me, but they kept after me all the same. That’s why I came to live with my son on this other little piece of land I had named Palo de Venado. And my son grew up and marries my daughter-in-law Ignacia and has already had eight children. In other words, that business is already old and should have been forgotten by now. But it’s clear it hasn’t been.” (Rulfo 441). This is what Juvencio had to say about the situation he was being faced with, and why he thought he was free of the problem.
