One of the unique aspects of Girl in landscape has some unique traits that are also in weird westerns is the location. In particular for girl in landscape it works particularly well due to the fact that it uses the locations and structure of the place that the characters interact with to pose a unique question. Girl in landscape seems to tackle in a very diverse variety of manners issues of intolerance. It explores the concepts of racism, and prejudice.
The term racism refers to the assertion that there is a superior and inferior group based on race. In this case the book does not say exactly …show more content…
Because they are genderless it seems they are neither he nor she’s and this might be part of the justification for why they call them it in some cases but at one point we clearly see Doug deliberately correct a fellow settler in calling the arch-builder an “it” due to his misplaced anger at the arch-builder which manifests as definite racism, where instead of just saying “it” as a general correction, Doug says so with a malicious intent no matter how oblivious to the insult the arch-builder is. The racism remark is part of the physical and mental attack that Doug is trying to inflict on hiding kneel. As well one of the interesting aspects that the book displays is that instead of making them merely direct parallels to any specific group they are genderless, and race less making it truly apparent upon further inspection that they are more very emblematic of the human condition. One instance where this happens is that while at Pella’s house initially hiding kneel attempts to make a joke when the situation becomes uncomfortable and even makes friendly gestures to when he meets new people. In a very human way in which we normally expect others to behave. While they do not obviously fit into the larger society due to their cultural heritage differences they are very much a unique group of people that the story uses to create this embodiment of a people that are unfairly judged due to a stereotype and prejudice. The book also uses hiding kneels kind response to show how truly gentle the arch-builder is by him only shaking his head in sorrow instead of lashing back in anger when he is assaulted which shows how unjustified the attack was. The book uses this in a way in which it can show a contrast of the perceived truth and the actual truth to bring into question the very nature of the prejudice. It seems to present a perspective of promoting
