My Experience Of Reading Books In Middle School

When I was a child, I loved reading so much that I would read anything I passed by. No warning sign, instructions, or map directions were left unread. My mother would buy books for me whenever she went to a store. My Aunt Kate gave me a collection of The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley books when I was in middle school. No library could compare to my Dollar General and hand-me-down book collection.
My mother told me a story about one of the first times I ‘read’ a book. My mother used to read a book to me before I went to bed. The story of ‘Cinderella’ was one of the stories I wanted to hear the most. One day my mother asked me to read ‘Cinderella’ to her. According to my mother, I retold Cinderella word for word, but I was on the wrong page

I would read books at home, in class, and during a break. I read frequently which meant frequent trips to the school’s library for more books. Middle school allowed students more freedom in which books they chose to read. Teachers and librarians encouraged students to read above their book level range. In contrast, my elementary school would tell students to read inside of their book level. This was great since my middle school 's library had more of a selection. Romance novels and books about high school students were my preferences. One of the authors I read the most was Sarah …show more content…
Since I liked reading teen and young adult romance stories, I usually wrote about a girl and a guy falling in love in a high school setting. They turned out to be simple and boring pieces of writing that I scrapped later on. Once I entered high school, I wrote more about fantasy than romance. I wrote about children in a magical high school, princes that fled their castle, and a rebel helping a prince find his long lost twin. Eventually, I gave up on these stories and have not returned to them in a while. I did not consider myself a good writer, so I stopped writing

My family wasn’t around a lot when I was younger. My mom and dad both worked full time jobs, and the age gap between my sisters and I made it hard for us to enjoy spending time together. I’ve always felt that the big age gap between me and everyone in my family always affected our closeness. They all seemed so grown up, understanding things that I had yet to grasp, and doing things that I wasn't able to do. I longed to be able to be as grown up as the rest of my family.…

I became literate at a very young age around one or two years old and people could understand what I wanted. For example, bolitas (meant balls in Spanish) cooked beans and no bolitas was refried beans. I had a way of commutating with my family but sometimes I would forget what the word was and I used to describe the item itself. They would eventually understand what I mean. Unlike one of the cases in Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, I did not have a tutor or anything like that.…

My mom always says, “readers are leaders”. You don't need to be valedictorian or captain. You simply need to make your own discoveries, maintain your values and not take a back seat in this ride called life. These are attributes I believe I possess. Like mythology, fairy tales stem from a rich history of oral tradition and have been used to explain aspects of society and culture. “Disney’s Cinderella” by Tennessee Reed captures an older piece of literature and places the story into modern times. The story of Cinderella places her living with her ungrateful stepmother and stepsisters. She is the maid, caretaker, and slave to the women. In this story, Cinderella is accused of “stealing (a stepsisters) dark blue boot-cut jeans and white cotton blouse by Guess?”…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

When I Learned to Read and Write. I first started reading and writing in preschool, my teacher was very helpful and did everything she could do to help me achieve goals, and become who I am today. When I was younger I would pretend that I could read and I would read to all of my toys. In preschool, my teacher saw me trying to read so she came over to me and started to help me sound out the words and form the sentences so that I could read. The first book I read was Dr.Seuss’ “Green, Eggs and Ham.”…

Even though Cinderella two wicked step-sisters were heartless and arrogant, “she still embraced them and forgave them with all her heart and married them to two great lords of the Court”. In the Grimm’s brother’s version, the folktale ended violently and fiercely because “the two step-sister’s eyes were pecked out by pigeons for their wickedness and falsehood” and they were blind as long as they lived. According to Maria Tatar the author of numerous articles on fairy tales and also ten scholarly books, “fairy tales have modeled behavioral codes and development paths, even as they provide us with terms for thinking about what happens in our world”…

This thought of pressure and stress has caused me to become unmotivated when being motivated is the key element to reading and writing. When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
