That 's because of an "epidemic of invisibility" cited by researchers at the University of Southern California, who analyzed more than 21,000 characters and behind-the-scenes workers on more than 400 films and TV shows released from September 2014 through August 2015. Just 28.3 percent of characters with dialogue were from non-white racial/ethnic groups, though such groups are nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population.
The black experience is one that not only many African Americans and stories that should be told, but numbers show that it can be quite lucrative.

Underground, an African American experience of escaping slavery, averages 3 million total viewers on Wednesday nights this season, according to Nielsen’s “live plus-7” estimates. The series debuted 3.5 million viewers, that’s the biggest audience for an original series premiere in the channel’s history. The last time WGN America drew as big an audience was in September 1998 for a Chicago Cubs-St. Louis Cardinals game.
