Ta-Nehisi Coates, an African-American writer and national correspondent for The Atlantic, published his book Between the World and Me in 2015. Ta-Nehisi Coates has unique writing style by using a letter writing format and leading the thesis of this book with a host’s interview. Through the whole book, Ta-Nehisi Coates stresses a currently serious issue in American society, which is the gap between whites and blacks.
Ta-Nehisi Coates adopts letter writing format and narrative writing style in the book Between the World and Me to support his thesis. Coates begins his writing with one word “Son”, which indicates the primary audience is his son, Samori. However, Coates intends to notify the black young generation to continue “[struggling] for the memory of your ancestors. [Struggling] for wisdom. [Struggling] for the warmth of The Mecca. [Struggling] for your grandmother and grandfather” (Coates 151). This kind of writing genre gives readers a feeling of listening to a mercy father’s advice to his son while realizing writer’s main idea through reading. On the other hand, Coates describes a series of his personal life stories in the plot. For example, Coates recalls when he lived in the Baltimore, he feared about the violence and the boy with ski jacket who carried a gun.
