The book 1984 by George Orwell has several situations in which they alter the news or the past and that is similar in how the US alters the news or events to hide things from the public. There are examples that have happened before and even recent events that have came up that have similar situations as in 1984. There are even groups in 1984 such as the Ministry of Love and the Two Minutes of Hate that can be compared to the CIA and just the general media that are altered to the media 's favor.
So recently new information came up about UC Davis trying to cover up some unwanted attention from an event that took place on their college campus. The event took place in 2013 and it was a pepper spraying of student protesters on campus by on campus cops. UC Davis was not fond of the unwanted attention from this incident. UC Davis ended up paying several reputation consulting firms to get rid of the pictures and try to get this event of the internet. UC Davis ended up paying $175,000 in trying to get that info off the internet. There are similar parts of that story like this that take place in 1984 and that is that Winston 's job as a Ministry of Truth worker is similar to what the reputations consulting firms are hired for. So UC Davis is the big brother and the reputations consulting firms is the Ministry of Truth. UC Davis was trying to alter the past just as Ministry of Truth in Oceana alters info they don 't want the citizens to know:
