Imagine a harsh and frightening dystopia where controlling governments misuse technology, revise history and use fear and manipulation to maintain order. Is this a far cry from our society today? George Orwell’s, 1984, uses a grim, negative tone and irony in appealing to the reader’s emotional capacity for sympathy, fear, and desire while posing the rhetorical questions of reality versus truth. Written in 1949, George Orwell’s political novel, 1984, gives an exaggerated account of how individuals and regimes use propaganda and fear to gain power over people’s words, thoughts, and actions. Its purpose was to warn readers of the dangers of totalitarian government and to sound the alarm in Western nations about the rise of communism after the…

This amazing novel was really unpredictable as everything happened like a rollercoaster ride. However, it did have some drops throughout the book that I did not find amusing. The three main things that I personally adored about this novel was the idea, characters, and writing style. I really liked the idea of this novel as it was really eventful.…

The "2+2=5" slogan occurred in George Orwell's book entitled "1984" referring to the control of the human mind by the Party. It symbolizes the psychological manipulation over people in order to create a false reality. The mathematical sentence is a slogan promoted by the Party as part of the dictatorship. In the short video, pupils in the classroom are forced to accept the fact that two plus two equals five according to the teacher's instructions. What's more, the constant repetition of the equation indicates how they are "brainwashed" to accept the deceiving reality.…

How did I feel about the book Unlikely Allies? I had lots of difficulty reading the book, from the sudden changes in scenes to the exhausting writing. It felt like a sloppy mess of sudden twists and turns that would, in most books, keep me intrigued, but this did not interest me at all. If the author added just a little bit of flair to the certain parts of the writing then I think I would really enjoy the book. The book had things I didn’t like, a few things I did like, and a couple things I would change.…

I have so many different thoughts and opinions about this book. I started out loving Has to Be Love, was super conflicted in the middle, but thought the ending was pretty spectacular. Like I said, conflicted. Our narrator, Clara, was rather frustrating to read about because she was so torn between what decisions to make about particular things, but she was a truthful character (to us at least). Reading Clara's justifications for wanting certain things made me more interested in the story and what would eventually happen…

“A symbol is an object, character, figure or color that is used to represent an abstract idea or concept” (Oxford Dictionary). Authors often use symbols and metaphors throughout their novel in order to add depth and meaning to stories. It is a common technique that allows the author to further foretell and capture the important elements of the story without directly telling it. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses numerous symbols throughout The Great Gatsby to highlight key ideas and contract places, all in which reinforce the message of the novel. The author’s use of symbolism and metaphoric language is clearly evident from beginning until end as it portrays the belief of characters and the seasonal setting, such as the use of summer and fall which helps…
