Such as a jewish boy having a bar mitzvah or a latin girl having a quinceanera. Now those two events aren’t painful but still have an impact on their life as a whole. It doesn't even have to be a religious or cultural ceremony. Many families all over the world including here in America have their own ways of kids becoming adults or at least making a big step into adulthood some these can include going on a special camping or hiking trip, killing an animal while hunting or even building something. These events just depend on the family, culture, or religion. Even in some cases people embark on their own journey into adulthood and do what they think is best (McKay 1).
In the story there is a shift in her maturity. It begins to progress as soon as she gets cut, even though initially the progression is very slow. By the end of the story she appears to be more understanding and learns to live with, and embrace the scar. The same thing happens to all the people who go through initiations. They go in young kids, but after the ordeal they are now essentially grown-ups and now have many more responsibilities that they didn't have before. Physically because her face getting cut and then having a scar means she has lost some of her beauty. Intrapersonally but having a conflict and then realizing she has to move on from it. Her going through this is something young people all over the world face, rites of passage they must go through in order to be functioning members of their society. Many times these ceremonies involve physical scarring or exposing their body to large amounts of stress. After these ceremonies these people can now be considered men or women.
