Disorder Description:
The autism spectrum explains a range of conditions categorized as neurodevelopmental disorders. The autism spectrum includes not only autism but also disorders ranging from childhood-disintegrated disorder to Asperger’s syndrome. The autism spectrum is characterized by difficulty in communication, social insufficiencies, repetitive behaviors, cognitive interruptions and sensory difficulty. The disorders are put on the spectrum, based upon the level of severity of their characteristics. Autism spectrum disorders are identified in the first twelve to twenty-four months of age but can be noticed earlier if the disorder is more austere. Adam has Asperger’s and has extreme difficulty interacting with others, but he invites Beth into his reclusive world and she is charmed. They begin a relationship despite heavy criticism from Beth’s friends and family. In the end Beth, despite their loving relationship, realizes that her and Adam are just too different and Adam would never be able to express his emotions in the way she needs. Beth amicably breaks it off with Adam but ends up writing a children’s book based upon him.
Temple Grandin: This movie tells the story of an autistic woman named Temple Grandin (Claire Danes) and her life story. The plot is told through flashbacks to her childhood, teenage, and college life. Temple works on her uncle’s ranch and develops in affinity for cattle and animal science. She gets a job and designs new revolutionary techniques in the cattle ranching field. In the end, Temple transitions into being an autism advocate and speaks to crowds about how she has lived and adapted with her
