Mike DeBonis and Kelsey Snell of The Washington Post wrote an article titled Trump’s victory heralds a golden age for Republicans on Capitol Hill, which discusses how the Republican Party now holds control over the Presidency, congress, the House of Representatives, and the Senate. This means that the government is now unified for the first time since 2007. The article alludes to the idea that since the government is unified, the republican party will start to change the course of diplomacy in the United States and even un-do some of Obama’s legislation. The Washington Post article reflects on the role of political parties in government, the concept of unified government, our understanding of party discipline, and how all of that will be used to shape America’s new diplomacy because of the 2016 election. This article stood out as significant because of the way the legislative branch works. Meaning that if the president-elect, Donald Trump has a republican majority in the legislative branch then it will be easier for congress to create bills that he would be willing to stand behind, and easier for the senate to ratify those laws. Not mentioned in the article is the fact that Trump will be able to appoint at least one supreme court justice. Whoever he appoints will likely be a republican, which would swing the supreme court to the side of the republicans.
