Sexual Assault On Campuses

The article “The Real Sexual Assault Problem— And How To Fix It”, by B. Richardson and J. Shields, expresses its concerns for students involving sexual assault on campuses. The study says that students are victims of flawed campus policies rather than victims of “rape culture”. In other words, the colleges who have permissive policies, are those that endanger more students to sexual assault than colleges that have restrictive policies. B. Richardson and J. Shield’s article effectively states that campus social regulations are associated with sexual assault. There are many arguments regarding sexual assault on campuses, but attention given to how schools can stop incidents are rare. The big question is “How can universities lessen the need for these painful trials by reducing sexual exploitation and drunken couplings?”. Richardson and Shield persuade readers effectively that reformers almost always oversee that social regulations could be a tremendous cause of sexual assault. The two found within 1,300 colleges nationwide that the sexual assault rate is lower at schools that ban alcohol and have regulations on opposite sex overnight stays in dorms. They calculated the amount of campus sexual assaults within each college for every 1,000 female students who have a dorm room. Then, they collected data of all of the same colleges that have dry campuses. Lastly, they gathered dorm policies of the colleges and separated them into two categories. The categories are the colleges that ban opposite sex overnight guests and those that allowed it in some way. There has been an increase in sexual assault by 3.1 to 4.4 times higher at permissive colleges than colleges who have restrictive policies.
