The Vietnam War was a war that was catastrophic. By catastrophic it means 58,000 Americans were killed and 304,000 were wounded out of the 2.7 million that served in the war. When draft letters were sent out some people responded were fresh out of high school, which means that they really didn’t want to go to war, but were forced to unless they were willing to flee to another country or serve prison time. In the texts “On the Rainy River” and “The Greatest: My Own Story” by Tim O’Brien and Muhammad Ali, it shows their perspectives on the Vietnam war which were responses to the draft letters they received in the mail. In “On the Rainy River” Tim O’Brien talks about the thoughts that were going through his mind when he received the draft letter.…
“The storyteller” is an article by Sandra Cisneros about her life journey beginning from post graduate school to a school teacher. In between she writes about her life in the point of views of a dependent, a growing writer, and a teacher, with short descriptions that gives the reader a glimpse of her mentality on each stage. All that is mixed up into the life of an average Hispanic woman from Chicago. Halfway through her article, during her “growing writer” stage, Cisneros writes a paragraph about what her and her friends do together.…
I was handing out food with Herb at the closed down grocery store. The power outage was really taking its toll. Then in somewhat of a flash we both found ourselves on the first episode of season 19, on my favorite show Survivor! “Umm… is it just me or did we not sign up for this?” exclaimed Herb in a shocked voice. I wasn’t really sure either.…

Title: Memoirs and transformative decision The memories that transformed me was when I started seventh grade at school Benigno Fernández García. In the early days of my seventh grade I met a girl of eight. She became my best friend. One day my mom went to school and saw me with her. When I got home my mom told me that friend does not seem a good friend.…
Moving Again Have you ever moved schools? Have you lost friends? Well it really stinks. Moving schools have affected me for lots of reasons, but I am getting better.…
Reflection Paper: CRAZY A good book should cause you to think, a great book invites you to question your bias and a brilliant book shows you how necessary cultural change is (starting with oneself) and why it is so important. Pete Earley’s transparency in disclosing his family’s journey through mental illness and how America’s culture of indifference towards those who suffer with it, is an invitation to redirect how we approach social justice for those who are mentally ill. As Early begins to understand the long- term ramifications of having a loved one with mental illness in a system rife with problems, he recognizes the need to understand and explore why our approach to mental health is not meeting the needs of such a vulnerable population.…
Literature Review My current practicum placement is at ReDiscover Common Ground in Grandview, Missouri. The members (clients) of ReDiscover come from many diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Each member shares at least one common ground, the fact that they all are working towards healthy living with mental illness. Due to the impact that mental health disorders have on each individual many members of ReDiscover are unable to obtain jobs or maintain healthy relationships with others.…
The Resurrecting Power of Stories The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a fictional story that exhibits love, loss, war, coming-of-age, innocence, and so much more. O’Brien explores all of these themes through an even bigger topic: storytelling. He also inversely picks apart the various aspects of storytelling via the smaller themes.…
I was inspired through the introduction of the open dialogues approach in the lecture, a new ways of thinking about mental illness and the treatment. Psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses; para-professionals; clients; even their family and the public, mostly focused on the controlling of symptoms, as well as removing the symptoms as possible; I thought attention could be more directed to generating dialogues from clients and their family members, attended to what they are saying rather than planning interventions solely aimed at motivating change in the clients or their families. The Open Dialogue approach was first developed in the 1980s by Jaakko Seikkula, Birgitta Alakare, Markku Sutela and their multidisciplinary team at Keropudas hospital…
This article focuses on the families ' experiences of mental illness rather than the individual. Boschman explains that having an external party that has seen everything first hand is beneficial in the diagnosis process (2007). LeFrancois and Diamond would note that this actually delegitimizes the individual 's experiences as the individual cannot make sense of their experience for themselves because family members ' accounts are taken as truth (2014). This could also be because 'mentally ill ' individuals are often seen as not being able to take care of themselves. Both articles talk about the framework of performance, where a culturally dominant discourse that is biomedical is a produced effect that is shaped, formed, and reproduced within…
for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) say there is “no conclusive evidence to support effectiveness’(Rcpsych.ac.uk, n.d.). The most frequently used intervention of the medical model is psychiatric drugs, which are used for all forms of mental disorder. Drugs have been the main response to those with mental distress since the 1950’s, due to the pharmacological revolution, although, Baldessarini (1999) says there is an evidence base to support their appropriate use. There is a lot of controversy around drug use for mental distress as some experts say it can make patients feel worse and can lead people to feel reliant on them. The figures of anti-depressant use in the UK in 2006 hit 31 million and this figure continues to rise.…
The lived Experience of Serious Mental Illness Personally, I believe that every person should be able to have a support system because not too many have the pleasure of having it. To show what a supportive system is having someone there to listen, motivate, inspire, and care of a person well being. When reading "The Lived Experience of Serious Mental Illness" it brought joy to me because she manages to marry someone who cared for her and has such a loving heart. This is what support is about she had her mental illness and David has muscular dystrophy perhaps the reason why they understood each other was because they had something powerful in common. That something in common brought them together to live their experience with one another.…
Topic: Stigma of Mental Illness Thesis Statement: My goal is to go past the stigma of mental illness that our community has. This is a problem that I think I can solve with each of us just doing a small action I. Introduction A. Attention material: Have you ever felt worthless and unimportant? I have and about ¼ of the population of America has too (NAMI). B. Credibility material: I have gone through the ups and downs of mental illness more than once. Even to the point of almost killing myself.…
A Tale of Two Stories In this section, I would complete an exercise call “Tale of Two Stories” and recall two different situations in my life that I have encountered when my values conflicted with what I was asked to do. This exercise is designed to help me identify and develop what is necessary to achieve to find how I would voice and act on my values in my life. The first part of the exercise is to recall a time in my experience when my values conflicted with what I was expected to do in a particular, non-trivial decision, and I spoke up and acted to resolve the conflict.…
