The thesis of this news article highlights police brutality in the form of over militarization, only to later describe the issues that accompany it throughout the article. For instance, in the fourth paragraph, the article claims, “It is also agreed that effective policing depends on building or maintaining a sense of community between officers and other citizens. Militarization is both the cause and effect of conflict between the communities and the police departments…it is difficult to see someone in body armor as a neighbor.” This explains how militarization has ruined the relationship between the police department and members of the community. The main purpose of the news article is to analyze the cause and effects of over militarizing police, as well as provide the author’s opinion as to what can be done to alleviate tension, drawing attention to issues such as imbalances in the racial representation within communities and their police departments and construction of social barriers throughout the passage using Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. The target audience of this news article is older people of both genders with mostly conservative belief due to its criticism of the government’s expansion of police power as well as frequency of expressing religious ideology.
